Though the majority of surviving works of art were made for members of elite social levels, substantial numbers were also produced for members of lower social groups. Both textual records and the quantity and variety of surviving objects make it clear that large numbers of paintings, sculptures and prints were made expressely to be sold to people in lower income strata.
