Pour la plupart des textes, notamment pour la première chronique en langue nationale, écrite vers 1310, est Tchèque celui qui parle tchèque. Cette même conception se met à la fin du siècle au service de la révolte de la noblesse contre le roi, et au début du xve siècle, au service du programme réformateur. Jérôme de Prague formule, à la veille de la révolution hussite, les traits distinctifs de la « nation » tchèque : le sol natal, la langue commune et aussi l ‘ ascendance maternelle et paternelle. C ‘ est ce dernier trait qui était déterminant pour définir le « Tchèque pur ». Dans le vocabulaire des théoriciens et des propagandistes hussites, on trouve le terme de « langue » lié aux formules sur « l’honneur, la bonne renommée et le salut » de la nation tchèque. Le nationalisme hussite s’adapte aux valeurs de la société chevaleresque tchèque.

According to most texts and especially according to the earliest chronicle written in the national language around 1310, a Czech is someone who speaks Czech. This idea animated the revolt of the nobles against the king at the end of the century and lay behind the program of reform that saw the light at the beginning of the 15th. Just prior to the outbreak of the Hussite Revolution, Jerome of Prague set down the distinctive traits of the Czech “nation”. These are: the native soil, a common language and descent through the mother and through the father. It was the last trait that was decisive for the definition of the “pure” Czech. In the vocabulary of the Hussite theoreticians and propagandists we find the term “language” used together with references to the “honor, the good reputation and the health” of the Czech nation. As far as its values were concerned Hussite nationalism was in the direct line of descent from the Czech Knights.
