Marie, modèle de vie chrétienne : quelques aspects de l’imitatio Mariae au Moyen Âge

À la fois vierge et mère, ayant porté et nourri son propre Créateur, Marie est « sans exemple » et fait figure d’exception. Or, paradoxalement, on peut voir à travers des sources diverses (sermons, traditions apocryphes, méditations, récits visionnaires…) qu’elle a pu être proposée à maints égards comme un modèle à imiter pour les croyants, femmes et hommes. On a retenu ici deux aspects principaux : Marie comme modèle de vie religieuse, que ce soit pour les observances régulières de la vie consacrée féminine ou pour l’idéal de vie mixte et de pauvreté recherché par certains ordres à partir du xiie siècle, et Marie comme modèle de relation au Christ, initiant à l’art de lui être comme une mère et invitant à compatir de tout cœur aux souffrances de sa Passion.

Both virgin and mother, Mary gave birth to and fed her creator. She is “without example” and stands out as an exception in every way. Nevertheless the picture that emerges from the examination of various sources such as sermons, apocryphal traditions, meditations and visionary narratives, is paradoxical—Mary was seen in many ways as a model worthy of imitation by believers, both men and women. We discuss two main aspects of this: a) Mary as model of the religious life, whether it concerns the consecrated life for women or the ideal of both sexes living together in poverty which certain orders sought to embody from the 12th century onwards and b) Mary as model of the relationship with Christ—initiatress into the art of being to him like a mother and who shows the way to a complete identification with the suffering of his passion.
