De la fabrication à l’étude des manuscrits : une affaire de mesure

Dans le livre manuscrit, de multiples éléments sont mesurables ou quantifiables. Parce qu’elles rendent compte de certains aspects matériels des volumes et témoignent des conditions de leur fabrication, ces mesures et quantifications constituent le point de rencontre entre les pratiques artisanales et leur compréhension par les historiens du livre. Après avoir rapidement décrit ce qui est mesurable dans le livre manuscrit, on analysera les informations disponibles sur les mesures réellement effectuées au Moyen Âge, avant de proposer quelques réflexions sur la mesure de l’historien. Cette dernière question est abordée tant à l’échelle des manuscrits – en comparant la démarche de l’historien et celle de l’artisan – qu’à celle des corpus, dans le cadre d’une réflexion sur l’intérêt et l’enjeu des méthodes quantitatives qui font également intervenir la mesure dans l’histoire du livre.

In the manuscript book, multiple elements are measurable or quantifiable. Because they reflect some material aspects of the volumes and bear witness to the conditions of their manufacture, these measures and quantifications constitute the meeting point between the work of the craftsman and its understanding by historians of the book. After a brief description of what can be quantified in a manuscript book, the author analyses the available information on what was really measured in the Middle Ages, before giving us his thoughts on the measure of the historian. This last question is treated with regard to the manuscripts – in a comparison between the approach of the craftsman with that of the historian – and also with regard to the corpus with the author’s thoughts on the interest and the usefulness of quantitative methods that introduce measure into the history of the book.
