Résumé 0

Found during the dredging operations of the mouth of the Arade River in 1970, the Arade 1 shipwreck was surveyed and excavated by a team of Centro Nacional de Arqueologia Náutica e Subaquática (National Centre for Nautical and Underwater Archaeology) between 2001 and 2005. The data study attested several similar architectural characteristics between the Arade 1 shipwreck and the Iberian ship treatises (Portugal and Spain) of the XVI and XVII centuries on one hand, and between the Arade 1 shipwreck and a set of Iberian-Atlantic tradition shipwrecks from the same historical period on the other hand. Nevertheless, the Arade 1 shipwreck presents some primary architectural characteristics that are original concerning the written and archaeological sources and that may correspond to regional constructive techniques. In fact, naval architectural treatises establish general rules that may not be followed in every shipyards of the kingdom, as private shipyards directed to the construction of commercial ships. The differences between the theorycal principles (conception process and construction methods) descript by the treatises and the practice of the shipyards of that period attested through the shipwrecks can allow the identification in the Iberian-Atlantic architectural space of cultural spaces particulars to regional architectural traditions.
