I This paper is based on a research project which began in 1987, before J. R Lander’s book English Justices of the Peace 1461-1509 had appeared A database was created for the period 1470 to 1509 on the basis of the commissions of the peace published in the Calendar of Patent Rolls which give the names and ranks of the justices and the places and dates where the commissions were issued.
