When I first heard about this conference, I was under the erroneous impression that it was going to be about landscapes. Thomas Hardy immediately sprang to mind : Throughout the field I find no grain ; The cruel frost encrusts the cornland ! When I learnt that the topic was urban landscapes, it became more than obvious that a poet of place, so deeply steeped in his native soil as Hardy, would not be a fit candidate.
