Une double tradition historiographique a fait de Godefroy d’Harcourt, fils cadet de l’importante famille des Harcourt et seigneur de Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, un homme aux fidélités fluctuantes et un héros normand. La relecture des sources tend à le montrer comme un noble attaché à ses droits et prêt à les défendre par tous les moyens. Se tournant vers le roi d’Angleterre car s’estimant lésé par la justice du roi de France, il s’appuie sur un réseau de clients normands qui, le cas échéant, le soutiennent par les armes dans la défense de ses intérêts locaux. Si les troubles et les nombreux faits d’armes dont il est accusé ne peuvent être niés, ceux-ci doivent être relus à la lumière de ses intérêts personnels, bien loin, à l’origine, du conflit franco-anglais.

A bifurcated historiographical tradition has made Godefroy d’Harcourt, the second-born son of the important Harcourt family and lord of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, both a man of fluctuating loyalty and a Norman hero. A review of the sources suggests rather a noblemen strongly attached to his rights and ready to do anything in order to defend them. Feeling that he had been unjustly treated by the justice of the French king, he turned his loyalty to the king of England, and could count on a network of Normans linked to him who would be ready to take up arms to defend his local interests. Whilst it cannot be denied that he caused difficulties and stirred up war, his actions need to be reviewed within the context of his personal interests which were initially quite separate from the Anglo-French conflict.
