Una complessa serie di strutture materiali e immateriali – non omogenee per cronologia, contenuto e funzione – operano per la definizione e la delimitazione topografica, per la identificazione toponomastica, per la gestione amministrativa, per la fruizione e per la percezione sociale dello spazio urbano di Roma. Tra queste, iuici e le regiones rappresentano le più longeve e efficaci forme di organizzazione a base territoriale della città antica. L’articolo indaga storia, forma, funzioni e significato di queste strutture territoriali, amministrative e sociali, in una prospettiva cronologica di lungo periodo.

Une série complexe de structures matérielles et immatérielles – sans homogénéité de chronologie, de contenu et de fonctions – opère pour la définition et la délimitation topographique, pour l’identification toponymique, pour la gestion administrative, pour l’utilisation et la perception sociale de l’espace urbain de Rome. Parmi celles-ci, les uici et les regiones représentent les formes les plus anciennes et les plus efficaces d’organisation territoriale de la ville antique. L’article explore l’histoire, la forme, les fonctions et la signification de ces structures territoriales, administratives et sociales, dans une perspective chronologique à long terme.

A complex series of material and immaterial structures – not homogeneous in terms of chronology, meanings and functions – operate for the topographical definition and delimitation, for the toponymy identification, for the administrative management, for the fruition and for the social perception of the urban space of Rome. Among these, the uici and the regiones represent the longest and most effective forms of territorial-based organization of the ancient city. The article investigates history, form, functions and meaning of these topographical, administrative and social structures in a long-term chronological perspective.
