Le mausolée, la ville et l’empereur : une nouvelle interprétation architecturale de la tombe d’Hadrien

Après une analyse autoptique et des études menées sur le Mausolée d’Hadrien / Château Saint-Ange entre 2009 et 2015, une nouvelle compréhension de l’architecture de cette construction massive est désormais possible sur une base plus scientifique. L’article est divisé en trois parties : analyse de la localisation du mausolée et sa relation avec la ville ; analyse des structures ; restitution architecturale de l’édifice. Les principales nouveautés peuvent être résumées de la manière suivante : identification de l’escalier qui conduisait au sommet de la structure ; identification d’une péristasis de colonnes autour du tambour ; compréhension de la disposition architecturale de la rotonde ; compréhension des principales phases de transformation ; identification d’un effondrement au cours de la première phase de construction qui a causé la modification du couloir d’entrée.

Following autoptic analysis and studies conducted on the Mausoleum of Hadrian / Castel Sant’Angelo between 2009 and 2015 a new understanding of the architectural layout of this massive construction is now possible on a more scientific basis. The article is divided in three parts: analysis of the relationship of the mausoleum with the city, analysis of the structures; architectural reconstruction of the mausoleum. Major achievements can be summarised as follows: identification of the staircase which conducted to the top of the structure; identification of a peristasis of columns around the drum; understanding of the architectural layout of the rotunda; understanding of the main transformation phases; identification of a settlement during the early construction phase which caused the modification of the entrance corridor.
