'The Circus Animals' Desertion' is a poem about the intertwining of life and art: the ageing poet, in his seventies, looks back at work written in his twenties and in early middle age, scrutinising it to see how much of his real life went into it. The poem was published (in journals) in January 1939, the month in which Yeats died, so has the poignancy of last words.
