Postérité et transmission des œuvres historiographiques carolingiennes dans les manuscrits des mondes normands

La rareté des témoins conservés des manuscrits normands et anglo-normands des XIe et XIIe siècles retraçant l’histoire des Francs, de même que la présentation extrêmement sélective de l’histoire des Francs dans l’historiographie normande, notamment par Dudon, Robert de Torigni et les auteurs des Annales de Jumièges ou de l’Abbreviatio gestarum regum Franciae, étudiée dans le présent article, suggèrent que le monde normand manifestait peu d’intérêt ou connaissait mal l’histoire carolingienne. Au lieu de cela, l’histoire des Francs et des Carolingiens faisait simplement partie d’un arrière-plan ancien dans lequel s’inscrivait l’émergence des Normands.

The meagre evidence of extant Norman and Anglo-Norman manuscripts of the 11th and 12th centuries containing Frankish history, together with the highly selective presentation of Frankish history in Norman historiography, notably by Dudo, Robert de Torigni, and the authors of the Annals of Jumièges and the Abbreviatio gestarum regum Franciae, examined in this paper suggest that there was little interest in, or knowledge of, Carolingian history in the Norman world. Instead, Frankish and Carolingian history merely formed part of the ancient historical background for the emergence of the Normans.
