La notion d’expressivité en linguistique historique : regard sur la linguistique française au xxe siècle

Cette contribution a pour but d’examiner la place que tient la notion d’expressivité dans le domaine de la linguistique historique du français. Sont d’abord examinées les conceptions de Ch. Bally, avec l’opposition qu’il établit entre langage « affectif » et langage « objectif », et la façon dont ces notions sont exploitées dans le champ diachronique par A. Meillet, l’expressivité étant pour lui le moteur indispensable pour la création de formes nouvelles. On observe ensuite comment ce qui était une idée force chez A. Meillet se trouve marginalisé par les linguistes se réclamant du structuralisme, mais réapparaît en grande partie dans le concept de subjectivité, omniprésent dans les travaux actuels sur la grammaticalisation.

This paper aims at examining the importance taken by the notion of expressiveness in French historical linguistics. We first examine Charles Bally’s use of the notion and the opposition he makes between “affective” and “objective” language, and the way in which these two notions are transposed into the diachronic field by A. Meillet, expressiveness being to him the necessary force lying behind the creation of new linguistic forms. Then we observe how what was a central idea in Meillet’s works came to be marginalized by linguists placing themselves in the structuralist tradition, but is by and large coming back to the fore through the concept of “subjectivity” that is ubiquitous in the current works on grammaticalization.
