La fouille du site des « Pleines » à Orval (Manche) a permis l’étude d’une occupation enclose du Second Âge du fer et de son environnement. Concernant l’habitat, trois phases successives s’échelonnant entre le IIIe siècle avant notre ère et le début du Ier siècle de notre ère ont pu être reconnues. Parmi les structures de la dernière phase, un puits a livré les restes de plusieurs seaux en bois ainsi qu’une remarquable attache d’anse de seau en bronze à décor anthropomorphe. Mais ce sont surtout les vestiges funéraires qui retiennent l’attention. Localisés en marge du chemin de desserte du premier établissement, ceux-ci regroupent une incinération et surtout une remarquable tombe à char, structure totalement inédite pour la région. Cette dernière, attribuée au début de La Tène moyenne, a livré un important mobilier métallique, éléments liés au char (clavettes, systèmes de suspension, …), aux harnais (d’une conception tout à fait originale), à l’armement du défunt ou encore à l’outillage qui l’accompagnait. Parmi les objets personnels du défunt une attention toute particulière peut être portée à une bague en or.

The excavation of the “Pleine” site in Orval (Manche) allowed the study of an enclosure settlement of the Second Iron Age and of its environment. Concerning the domestic area, three successive phases dated between the 3rd century BC and the beginning of the 1st century AD were able to be recognized. The relics of several wooden buckets as well as a remarkable fragment of a bronze handle of a bucket with an anthropomorphic decoration were discovered in a well belonging to the last period of occupation. But it is especially the funeral relics that caught our attention. Located near the pathway leading to the first settlement, the tombs included an incineration and an outstanding chariot burial, which is new for the region. In this grave, belonging to the beginning of Middle La Tène period, many important metallic objects were found, amongst them parts of the chariot (linch-pin, suspension system, …), harnesses (of a completely original design, …), weapons belonging to the deceased and other implements which accompanied him. Amongst the personal objects of the deceased in the presence of a gold ring is particularly noteworthy.
