‘Down’ en bristolien non standard : un exemple de condensation

This study aims to evaluate the impact of parameters such as variation and enunciative semantic factors which help understand some specific and familiar uses of the marker down in a Bristolian dialectal variety (mainly) spoken in three suburbs (Beminster, Knowle West, Hartcliffe). The construction considered here is ‘down + a punctual entity’ : ‘down ar muh’ = ‘at / to my mother’s, ‘down ar club’ = ‘at / to my club’, etc. The variety under study is locally called Brizzle and will be referred to as BR, and standard English as ST. This study shows that these uses far from being aberrant are highly appropriate for signalling the status of the relationship between speakers in particular contexts. The construction itself must be considered in so far as it is diachronically derived from the ‘condensation’ of the marker of ‘vagueness’ down and another more precise marker (from, to, at, aboard, etc.) which seems to have been absorbed. This condensed construction implies a closer kind of relationship, a kind of complicity between local speakers which appears to induce a claim of belonging to a social and linguistic group.

Cette étude tente d’évaluer l’impact de paramètres tels que la variation et les opérations énonciatives qui éclairent la compréhension de certains emplois spécifiques et familiers du marqueur down dans une variété dialectale de bristolien principalement utilisée dans trois communes de la banlieue de Bristol (Bedminster, Knowle West, Hartcliffe). On considèrera ici la configuration ‘down + a punctual entity’ : ‘down ar muh’ = ‘at / ‘chez ma mère’, ‘down ar club’ = ‘à mon club’, etc. La variété étudiée ici est localement appelée Brizzle, on aura recours aux abbréviations BR pour cette variété dialectale et ST pour l’anglais standard. Cette étude montre que loin d’être aberrante cette configuration est particulièrement appropriée pour indiquer le statut de la relation entre locuteurs dans les contextes pertinents. La configuration doit elle-même être prise en compte dans la mesure où elle correspond à la ‘condensation’ du marqueur de repérage vague down et d’un marqueur prépositionnel de répérage relativement plus précis (de, à, chez, etc.), qui semble avoir fait l’objet d’une absorption. La configuration condensée implique une relation plus étroite, une sorte de connivence entre locuteurs d’une même localité, ce qui semble relever en certains cas de la revendication d’appartenance.
