I. Preliminary remarks This paper focuses on what Scottish landscapes and land-scaping can mean and what they can actually be, whether they are living, lived in, or represented as pre, post or simply human. As Edward W. Soja wrote: It is necessary to begin by making as clear as possible the distinction between space per se, space as a contextual given, and socially-based spatiality, the created space of social organization and production.
