Published in 1969, Stanley Cavell's first book, Must We Mean What We Say? formulates succinctly a question that remains central to his work up to his present essays: "What kind of knowledge is the knowledge of what we ordinarily mean in using an expression, or the knowledge of the particular circumstances in which an expression is actually used?"
