Once during a seminar for graduate students of color held at the university where I teach, two colleagues spoke on the importance of having a mentor. One colleague particularly stressed the choosing of someone who does not necessarily have to be a person of color. What should matter, she emphasized, is whether or not the mentor is supportive and avoids trying to make the student a duplicate of her or himself.
