INTRODUCTION The 1979 papal visit to Ireland was a triumph. In Dublin alone over a million people, a third of the Republic's population, attended an open-air mass in the Phoenix Park and masses elsewhere attracted exceptionally large crowds. Apart from the enthusiasm it generated, what characterised Pope John Paul II's visit was the moral and doctrinal conservatism of his homilies.
