Résumé 0

Even though histories of science are more often than not written by the “victors of scientific warfare” (Murray 1994), one should be able to make as objective and acute an analysis of scientific rhetoric as possible. Based mainly on the detailed analysis of three examples of the scientific rhetorical negation of linguistic doctrines (Sextus Empiricus Against the Professors, Chomsky’s Cartesian linguistics and the debate beween Adamczewki and Boisson in 1999-2001), this paper attempts to give an account of the major devices used in the scientific debate in order to contradict, oppose and undermine an opponent’s theory.
