In the conclusion of a seminal article on the history of the French gallery, Jean Guillaume observed that “in order to understand the French gallery one should not think first of the Galerie François Ier (Fig. 1, pl. XIV, p. LXIV) and the Galerie des Glaces (Fig. 2, pl. XIV, p.
