Liana Maria Salvia Trindade et al., « L’influence de l’ésotérisme français au Brésil », Presses universitaires de Lyon, ID : 10.4000/books.pul.10800
This is a study on the historical and sociocultural conditions that have brought about the creation of french esoterism in Sao Paulo (Brazil) at the turn of the century. Between 1905 and 1908 the ideas of Saint Martin, Papus and Mesmer arrived in south-west Brazil thanks to the O Pensamento editors, supported by Durville in Paris and by Durville’s publisher son. The esoteric circle in Sao Paulo was made up of people from the urban middle-class and by liberal and positivist intellectuals. Our study concludes that esoterism was the powerhouse behind modernity for the young Republic. Moreover we have concluded that despite the influence of north-american esoterism on the present-day brazilian esoteric movement, the french influence remains present through the accent placed on mystic belief towards the Count of Saint-Germain and reveals the predominance of french imaginariness.
