Résumé 0

This article presents the Brazilian dynamics of one of those so-called paranormal phenomena which can be observed among the followers of spiritualism: «psychography» or automatic writing. Such production of personal messages, medical prescriptions, moralizing treatises and, also, poems and novels, is said to be directly inspired through the «medium-channel» by the Spirits – i.e. the souls of the dead - who are supposed to communicate with the living by this and other means. After a brief historical introduction about the origins of that phenomenon in the neo-spiritualist (USA) and Kardecist ((France and Brazil) context, the author analyses particularly the large mediumnic literature (novels and poetry)) produced in Brazil during the last decades and its participation in the construction of Brazilian social imaginary. She points out how, through a mythification of history and its characters, this corpus enables the adepts of this credo (6 to 7 million Brazilians) to find some coherent though arbitrary explanations for the difficulties of all kinds which beset their country.
