Chapter 3. Towards a “Committed Encounter”? Participatory Action Research and Restitution With Street Children (La Paz, Bolivia)

Through a reading of a voluntary collaboration undertaken in a “rehabilitation center” for street children in Bolivia, which became ethnographic fieldwork, I revisit how restitution was constructed between the different actors and the ethnologist. In particular, I will demonstrate how restitution is closely linked to ethnographic research, and how it takes shape as a result of the reactions, explanations, analyses, and proposals from the children. After defining the concept of “committed encounter”, the latter being a prerequisite for restitution, I will highlight some more general methodological lessons on how to conduct anthropology with children.

À partir de la lecture d’une collaboration volontaire réalisée dans un « centre de réhabilitation » pour enfants des rues en Bolivie, qui s’est transformée en travail de terrain ethnographique, je propose de revisiter la manière dont la restitution s’est construite entre les différents acteurs et l’ethnologue. Je montrerai en particulier comment la restitution a été étroitement liée à la recherche ethnographique, et comment elle a été modulée à la suite de réactions, explications, analyses et propositions des enfants. Après avoir défini la notion de « rencontre impliquée », cette dernière étant un préalable à la restitution, je soulignerai quelques enseignements méthodologiques plus généraux sur les manières de faire de l’anthropologie avec les enfants.
