This lecture is intended as a brief introduction to three types of ancient Greek ritual that have had my interest over the last twenty years. Only recently it began to dawn upon me that they share a common feature, of which I had never been aware before. I am referring to the remarkable contribution of the principles of free association or analogy to their construction, to their function and to their meaning.
