1. The problem and previous research The central act in the worship of the ancient Greek heroes was sacrifice. Many other actions were also performed—processions, dances, music, singing, prayers, athletic contests, horse-races, festivals and the déposition of votive offerings—but they were ail, to some extent, connected with sacrifice.
