In a now classic paper from 1976, Nicholas Coldstream stated, “Greek hero-worship has always been a rather untidy subject, where any general statement is apt to provoke suspicion”. This is indeed true and the schematic view that has characterized the study of the sacrificial rituals of Greek hero-cult is therefore the more surprising. According to standard opinion, heroes had sacrificial rituals distinct from those of the gods and linked instead to the cult of the dead and the chthonian divin...
