McGrath’s work has been a constant companion and inspiration for Watson who writes about his first encounter with the poet at a symposium in a North Dakota abbey. A musical performer himself, Watson recounts his interviews with McGrath there, which initially revolved around the poet’s musical tastes, but subsequently opened onto an encyclopedic range of subjects matching that found in McGrath’s writing. Watson describes McGrath’s way of talking, tracing it back to his Irish ancestry, while also providing examples of the bard’s artistic and political insights and of his human warmth. He shows him in one his favorite haunts in Moorhead, Minnesota, interspersing his reminiscing on the poet with quotes from theologians, from fellow North Dakota writers and from McGrath’s own work. Watson insists on the poet’s continued but unfortunately still too rarely acknowledged relevance.

L’œuvre de McGrath n’a cessé d’accompagner et d’inspirer Watson qui évoque ici sa première rencontre avec le poète lors d’un colloque organisé dans une abbaye du Dakota du Nord. Watson, qui est entre autres choses musicien, raconte les entretiens avec McGrath qu’il réalisa alors et qui, justement, tournèrent d’abord autour des goûts musicaux du poète pour s’élargir ensuite à un champ encyclopédique de sujets, à la mesure de la diversité des champs rencontrée dans la poésie mcgrathienne. Watson décrit l’“expression orale” du poète et donne des exemples tant de la chaleureuse personnalité du barde que de sa finesse d’analyse en matière de politique comme sur les questions artistiques. Il le décrit notamment dans un de ses lieux de prédilection, à Moorhead dans le Minnesota. Émaillant ses souvenirs de citations diverses empruntées à des théologiens, à d’autres écrivains du Dakota du Nord, ou à l’œuvre de McGrath lui-même, Watson met l’accent sur l’actualité du poète, inentamée mais hélas encore trop peu reconnue.
