“Fear in a mouthful of dust:” Unreadability and The Waste Land

L’illisibilité, au sens d’un refus du texte de se laisser comprendre et interpréter, semble avoir été générée, en ce qui concerne The Waste Land, non pas par le texte lui-même, mais par les innombrables commentaires qui lui ont succédé. Une autre forme d’illisibilité, liée à la dimension dramatique du poème, assigne au lecteur la mission presque impossible de donner vie aux voix impersonnelles qui se croisent et se superposent. Si l’élucidation n’est qu’un obscurcissement qui rend le texte illisible, l’aveuglement volontaire semble être la voie vers une lecture éclairée du poème (re)devenu lisible, capable de (re)lier le lecteur à lui.

Unreadability, in the sense of the impossibility for a text to be understood or interpreted, seems to have been generated, in the case of The Waste Land, by the numerous comments on the text rather than by the text itself. Another form of unreadability stems from the dramatic dimension of the poem, which assigns to the reader the almost impossible task of impersonating those impersonal voices criss-crossing in the poem. If elucidation eventually obscures the text, making it unreadable, then the best way to read the poem might be to read it blindfold. The poem would become readable again, showing unsuspected capacity to relate to its reader.
