Résumé
The purpose of this essay is to examine the role played by international factors in the process that led to the breakup of Czechoslovakia and to the formation of a new partnership between the Czech Republic and Slovakia, as independent states. Having done this, we will attempt to highlight some recurrent themes and mechanisms within this process, and to draw a number of lessons that can then be applied to other cases of secession.
