In the 1695 edition of Camden’s Britannia, the editor was obliged to update the account of Manchester’s wool cloth manufacture claiming it « is of late very much improv’d by some modern inventions of dy[e]ing and printing». British historians, in their concentration on the cotton industry, have ignored this early occurrence of textile printing in Manchester.
