Bien que le Mont-Athos soit un lieu abaton interdit au sexe féminin, y sont conservés plusieurs documents importants au sujet des femmes à Byzance. Est examiné ici le testament de Kalè Pakourianè veuve, depuis 1093, du curopalate Symbatios Pakourianos et devenue la nonne Marie. Ce testament, daté de 1098, constitue un des deux exemplaires qui subsistent d’une femme byzantine. Il fournit de précieuses informations sur le statut légal, les biens et la maison (oikos) d’une aristocrate, sans enfant, à la fin du xie siècle à Constantinople, avant et après le décès de son époux : une riche maisonnée convertie en un couvent familial.

A Wealthy Widow of the Late 11th Century: the Will of Kale Pakouriane It is ironic that the archives of the Holy Mountain of Athos, a peninsula whose access is forbidden to the female sex (abaton), contains many documents of great importance regarding the life of Byzantine women. This article analyzes the testament of Kale Pakouriane, widow since 1093 of the kouropalates Symbatios Pakourianos, who became the nun Maria. This testament, dated to 1098, is one of only two surviving wills of a Byzantine woman. It provides substantial information for our understanding of the legal status, property, and household (oikos) of a childless aristocratic woman in Constantinople at the end of the 11th c., before and after the decease of her husband and the conversion of her house into a family convent.
