The richly evocative title and subject matter of the conference which initiated this brief article was “Borderlines and Borderlands.” And as an opening claim, I will invoke direct reference to this theme baldly to state that there are few writers whose artistic identity was more defined, whose career more marked, by literal and figurative border-crossing than that of Vladimir Nabokov.
