In his 1939 essay “What I Believe” E. M. Forster boldly states, “I hate the idea of causes, and if I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country.” Later in the same essay, he adds the equally bold description of the friends he has in mind : “an aristocracy of the sensitive, the considerate and the plucky” whose “members are to be found in all nations and classes, and all through the ages”.
