L’agglomération de Fanum Martis a été occupée du milieu du ier siècle ap. J.-C. jusqu’à environ 320, date à laquelle elle se réduit à une fortification. Les fouilles réalisées au cours des dix dernières années ont montré que l’artisanat occupait une place importante dans l’agglomération qui couvre, à son apogée, plus de 150 ha. Plusieurs des activités de production identifiées (céramique, objets métalliques – fer et bronze – et en verre) nécessitent l’utilisation du feu pour la réalisation d’objets manufacturés. Leur répartition montre qu’elles n’étaient pas cantonnées à l’extérieur ou en bordure des zones habitables, mais bien au cœur de la ville, bordant des bâtiments d’habitation. Un ensemble de fours à chaux occupait également une place importante lors du démantèlement de la ville.

Fanum Martis: fire craftsmen in the heart of the agglomeration. The small town of Fanum Martis was occupied from the middle of the first century AD onwards, till about the year 320 AD, when it was reduced to a small fortification. Ten years of intensive excavations have shown the importance of craftsman activities in the town centre, covering at its peak over 150 hectares. Several of the identified craftsman activities (pottery production, bronze and iron crafting and glass production) call for the use of fire during the processing. Their distribution pattern shows that they were not installed at the border zones, nor at the exterior, but in the centre of the town, amongst the dwellings. A group of chalk kilns occupied an important space at the destruction of the town.
