« Je suis quadruple citoyen : roubaisien, français, européen, du monde » : telle est la profession de foi d’André Diligent, né en 1919 à deux pas de la mairie de Roubaix, ville dont il est le premier magistrat de 1983 à 1994. Cette biographie vise d’abord à rappeler ce qu’il doit à son père, le démocrate-chrétien Victor Diligent, avocat des riches et des pauvres, puis à présenter son investissement au sein du Mouvement républicain populaire issu de la Résistance attaché à la famille, l’autorité tout autant qu’au souci social et à l’esprit de justice. Qualifié par les médias de M. Propre ou de Candide du Sénat pour avoir dénoncé la publicité clandestine à la télévision, André Diligent lutte durant 25 ans pour faire droit aux résistants de La Voix du Nord, est lucide sur l’Algérie et sur l’environnement. Ce catholique roubaisien, « capable de tout » pour sa ville, s’engage dans la résistance, suit Pierre Pflimlin pour une Europe proche de ses concitoyens.
