Among the less well known accomplishments of the Presocratics are their attempts to predict the weather. Thales, according to Aristotle was taunted with the familiar question, If you’re so smart, why aren’t you rich? As Aristotle tells the story, Thales, thanks to his studies of the heavens (ἐκ τῆς ἀστρολογίας), knew that the olive crop was going to be a good one.
