Considering a Woman in Greek “Big Dig” Archaeology: Mary Wyckoff (1906-1932) at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens

This article aims to historicize the particular mechanisms that opened up access to women to a career in the archaeological sciences. To do so, we propose to study the case of Mary Wyckoff (1906-1932), appointed in 1929 by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens to illustrate the material from its excavations of the ancient Greek agora in Athens. We seek to clarify the paradox that emerges between, on one hand, the historical exclusion of women from scientific professions, and on the other, the current proliferation of biographies of women in science.

Le présent article cherche à historiciser les mécanismes particuliers qui ont ouvert aux femmes l’accès à une carrière dans les sciences archéologiques. Pour ce faire, nous proposons un cas d’étude, celui de Mary Wyckoff (1906-1932), nommée en 1929 par l’American School of Classical Studies at Athens pour illustrer le matériel issu des fouilles de l’agora antique d’Athènes. Nous cherchons à éclaircir le paradoxe qui émerge entre, d’une part, le constat de l’exclusion historique des femmes des métiers scientifiques, et de l’autre, la multiplication des biographies de femmes dans les sciences.
