Les cangaceiros, célèbres bandits brésiliens, furent tour à tour considérés comme infrarévolutionnaires, bandits sociaux, bandits d’honneur et plus récemment comme simples bras armés des potentats locaux. De nombreux ouvrages traitent ainsi de la vie de la vie de Lampião, chef de la bande la plus illustre. Ce phénomène de banditisme, désigné par le terme de cangaço, reste néanmoins fort méconnu. Cette méconnaissance renvoie, en réalité, à celle de ces zones semi-arides où ces bandes sévirent et qui ne reçurent longtemps que des regards empreints de clichés. C’est dans le but d’offrir une autre explication au destin de ce Virgolino, devenu plus tard le bandit Lampião, que nous nous sommes attachés à suivre ses traces, alors qu’il n’est encore qu’un jeune homme, à travers la vallée du Pajeú, dans l’arrière-pays de l’État de Pernambuco et plus particulièrement à Villa Bella et Floresta. Son histoire nous a servi de fil d’Ariane pour opérer un retour vers la vie « au village » et entremêler sa trajectoire à celles de tous ces autres, qui avec lui composaient cette société, et jamais ne connurent la même renommée.

Los cangaceiros, famosos bandidos brasileños, fueron considerados por turno como infra revolucionarios, bandoleros, bandidos de honor y mas recientemente como sicarios de los coroneles. Numerosos libros han sido dedicados a contar la vida del mas famoso de ellos, Lampiao. Aun con estos estudios aquel fenómeno queda relativamente desconocido. Este desconocimiento toca de manera mas general las zonas semi-aridas en las cuales actuaban estas pandillas. Es con el proposito de proponer otra explicación del hado de Virgolino conocido despues como el bandido Lampiao, que decidi seguir sus huellas cuando era todavía un muchacho en el valle del Pajeu (Estado de Pernambuco) y mas particularmente en Villa Bella y Floresta. Su historia nos permite acercarnos a la vida pueblerina y reconsiderar su trayectoria mezclándola con todos los demas que formaban parte de esta sociedad, sin por lo tanto llegar a hacerse famosos como él.

The famous Brazilian bandits known as cancageiros were considered in turn as infrarevolutionaries, social bandits, honorable bandits and, more recently, as the mere armed hands of local potentates. Numerous works deal with the life of Lampião, the leader of the most famous gang. The phenomenon of banditism, designated by the term cangaço, remains, nevertheless, largely misunderstood. This misunderstanding originates in the semi-arid zones where these gangs ruled mercilessly and were viewed as stereotypes. It is in the goal of providing an alternative explanation of the fate of Virgololino, who later became the bandit Lampião, that his footsteps have been traced while still a young man, across the Pajeú Valley, in the back country of the state of Pernambuco and in particular Villa Bella and Floresta. His story provides a means of returning to «village» life and of interweaving his trajectory with that of all the others who, with him, made up this population and who never knew a similar fame.
