La Résistance constitue un phénomène remarquable au cours du xxe siècle en France, car elle fait d’un peuple vaincu non seulement un peuple vainqueur, mais elle permet également de résoudre la « crise d’identité nationale » des années trente. Les discours et même l’historiographie sur la Résistance ont participé de cette représentation héroïsante, en particulier dans les moments où elle était la référence dominante, dans l’immédiat après-Libération ou au cours des années soixante. Mais, avec la fracture des années soixante-dix, une autre représentation s’est peu à peu insinuée, s’imposant au tournant des années 1980-1990, remettant en question l’attitude de la France et des Français en général et faisant même peser le soupçon sur la Résistance.

The French Resistance was a remarkable phenomenon in the twentieth century: not only did it turn a defeated people into a victorious one, but it also solved the “national identity crisis” of the 1930s. The discourses and historiography of the Resistance contributed to building this heroic representation, in particular in the immediate post-War period and during the 1960s when this was the dominant perspective. However, in the 1970s, a new representation gradually emerged and became common place at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, questioning the attitudes of France and of the French in general, and even throwing suspicion onto the Resistance.
