Der Beitrag verfolgt anhand exemplarischer Texte die Kulturgeschichte der deutschsprachigen Gebrauchslyrik aus Anlass von Geburtstagen. Die moderne Geschichte der Gattung setzt im Barock mit der Praxis von Geburtstagsfeiern überhaupt ein und erlebt gleich zu Beginn bei aller Abhängigkeit von der adeligen Festkultur eine Blütezeit. Mit der Empfindsamkeit und der Goethezeit erweitern sich die Ausdrucksmittel der Kasuallyrik. Im 19. Jahrhundert wird sie zu einer im privaten Kreis weit verbreiteten Praxis des Bildungsbürgertums, der Lobpreis häufig durch Humor ausbalanciert. Die literarische Moderne wendet ihr den Rücken zu. Die Geburtstagsgedichte, die im 20. Jahrhundert entstehen, geraten mit wenigen Ausnahmen in den Ruf des Trivialen. Mit der Verbreitung des Internet zeigt sich freilich, dass Gedichte aus Anlass von Geburtstagen, die aus der Hochliteratur weitgehend verschwunden sind, im Internet weit verbreitet sind und auf große Nachfrage stoßen.

S’appuyant sur un ensemble de textes significatifs, l’article retrace l’histoire culturelle de la poésie en langue allemande composée à l’occasion des anniversaires. Le genre, dont l’histoire commence au baroque avec le rituel des fêtes d’anniversaire, ne tarde pas à faire florès, bien qu’il soit étroitement lié à la culture festive aristocratique. L’Empfindsamkeit et l’ère goethéenne voient s’élargir les moyens d’expression de la poésie de circonstance. Au XIXe siècle, celle-ci est devenue une pratique répandue au sein du Bildungsbürgertum et allie les éloges à un humour qui souvent les contrebalance. La modernité littéraire tourne le dos à cette forme de poésie. À quelques exceptions près, les poèmes d’anniversaire écrits au XXe siècle relèvent de la littérature triviale. Avec la généralisation d’Internet, force est de constater que les poèmes écrits à l’occasion des anniversaires connaissent à nouveau un vif succès : alors qu’ils ont quasiment disparu de la grande littérature, ils réapparaissent massivement sur la toile.

Based on texts illustrating the subject, the article retraces the cultural history of poetry in the German language composed on the occasion of anniversaries. The modern history of the genre began in the baroque period with the celebration of anniversaries and quickly flourished, despite the dependence on aristocratic festive culture. With the Empfindsamkeit and the era of Goethe, the means of occasional lyrical expression became more widespread. In the 19th century, it became common practice in the Bildungsbürgertum with eulogies often counterbalanced by humour. Literary modernity, however, turned its back to this form of poetry. With few exceptions, poems about anniversaries written in the 20th century are commonly considered as trivial literature. With the advent of the Internet, we cannot help noticing that poems written to commemorate anniversaries, which had lost their place in great literature, are commonplace on the Net and very popular.
