Cynthia Carey, « “Dismantling The Colonial Dream” in Leonard Woolf’s Autobiography Growing », Commonwealth Essays and Studies, ID : 10.4000/ces.8905
In his autobiography, Growing, Leonard Woolf attempts to grapple with the dilemmas arising from multiple aspects of dislocation. In addition to the obvious geographical displacement, he must deal with the temporal dislocation resulting from the fifty-year time lag and the subsequent problem of “retrospective gloss.” Finally, he must deal with the generic dilemma of where to situate his “life writing,” including a critical exploration of the multi-dimensional aspects of the so-called fallacy of representation.
