Le Building Information Model/Modeling/Management (BIM) cristallise aujourd’hui de nombreuses attentes et craintes dans le secteur de l’architecture. Certains associent au BIM la fin du « fonctionnement artisanal » des agences, voire la fin des missions des architectes. D’autres y voient une opportunité de consolider le rôle de l’architecte dans le projet. Mais qu’en est-il ? Comment les agences d’architecture se positionnent-elles par rapport au BIM ? Va-t-il transformer le secteur de l’architecture, l’organisation du travail et la définition de la profession d’architecte ? Les auteurs proposent d’aborder ces questions de manière dépassionnée sous deux angles principaux. Le premier est un angle historique et consiste à étudier les trajectoires passées de la profession d’architecte d’une part, et celle des outils de dessin ou conception assistée par ordinateur d’autre part. Le second est un angle quantitatif : les auteurs restituent une enquête par questionnaire qui a permis de dégager des tendances sur l’appropriation du BIM par les architectes. La combinaison de ces deux approches permet d’esquisser une analyse prospective sur l’impact de sa diffusion sur la profession et sur les agences d’architecture.

Building Information Model / Modeling / Management (BIM) captures many expectations and fears in the architectural field. It is sometimes associated with the death of the "artisanal operation" of architecture firms, or the decline of the architect's missions in architectural projects. BIM, however, is also seen as an opportunity to consolidate the architect's role within project management teams. Will BIM transform the architectural sector, the organization of architecture firms and the definition of the architectural profession? The authors propose to address these questions using two main approaches. The first is historical and consists of studying the past trajectories of the architectural profession, and the second concerns computer-aided design tools. This latter approach is quantitative: the authors report on a questionnaire survey that allowed them to identify trends in the appropriation of BIM by architects. The combination of these two approaches makes it possible to sketch a prospective analysis of interactions between BIM diffusion and the future of the architectural profession and architecture firms.
