The idea that radio could be an art form appeared very explicitly in 1943, when Studio d’Essai was founded. Before inventing concrete music and introducing “sound objects” into the history of music, Pierre Schaeffer had laid down the terms of a specifically radiophonic art form, which he likened to cinema in his Essai sur la radio et le cinéma [Essay on Radio and Cinema], which was published in 1941-1942.
