Encarar as ciências sociais como disciplinas, que essencialmente abordam o tempo pretérito ou presente do homem, é um pressuposto que implica revisitações e análises retrospectivas. Trata-se, portanto, de saber como olhar a construção do indivíduo no momento crucial da viragem do século XVIII para o século XIX, sobretudo porque interessa reflectir sobre a longa significação do indivíduo social e o seu processo histórico de estruturação até ao tempo presente. Herdeiro do sincretismo do inconsciente, da metáfora da interioridade, como representação do homem, do humanismo clássico, da modernidade, o homem do século XXI levanta justificadas questões sobre uma íntima relação que se estabelece entre a crise do laço social, os sistemas de representação e a emergência da comunicação como utopia.

In order to approach the social sciences as discipline which essentially deals with the present time of man is a presupposition that implies revisitation and a retrospective analysis. We are dealing essentially with learning how to look at the construction of the individual at the crucial moment of the turn of the eighteenth century. It is of interest to reflect upon the long significance of the individual and his historical and structural experience up to the present moment. The man of the twenty-first century gives origin to many questions concerning the intimate relation established between the crisis of social bonds, representation systems and the emergence of communication as a utopia.
