Shahd Al Shammari is a Professor of English Literature at the Gulf University for Science and Technology of Kuwait. She is also a respected non-fictional writer whose books address gender and ability issues, all themes that echo throughout her new book Head above Water: Reflections on Illness. The work is organized in autobiographical style, or what the author describes as a “creative non-fiction” (p. 6).
