“Arabic Pop Art” on Instagram: Questioning the Representations of Arabness and Khaleejiness in Digital Art

Instagram, the second most widely used social networking platforms in the world, is a privileged place for artists and art lovers to showcase artworks and visual content to a larger audience. In the Middle East and North Africa region, one Instagram account, @arabic.pop.art, currently gathers 399,000 followers by reposting daily various forms of digital work produced in the region. Based on the analysis of all the posts published there from March 2019 to March 2020, I discuss the important presence of Gulf citizens and residents among both the artists and the followers of this Instagram account and how Arab and gulfic/khaleeji symbols, icons and consumerist items are being used in the published artworks. Through its content and given its popularity, this account is actively participating in highlighting Arab youth pop culture and shaping representations of Arab and regional identities (Arabness and Khaleejiness).

Instagram, la deuxième plateforme de réseau social la plus utilisée au monde, est un lieu de publication privilégié pour les artistes et les amateurs d'art afin de présenter des contenus artistiques et visuels à un public plus large. Dans la région du Moyen-Orient et de l'Afrique du Nord, un compte Instagram, @arabic.pop.art, rassemble actuellement 399 000 followers en repostant quotidiennement diverses formes d'œuvres numériques produites dans la région. En m’appuyant sur une analyse de tous les posts publiés entre mars 2019 et mars 2020, je mets en évidence la présence importante de citoyens et de résidents du Golfe parmi les artistes et les followers de ce compte Instagram et je discute de la manière dont les symboles, icônes et objets consuméristes arabes et du Golfe sont utilisés dans les créations artistiques. Ainsi, par son contenu et compte tenu de sa popularité, ce compte participe activement à la mise en lumière d'une culture populaire de la jeunesse arabe et au façonnement des représentations des identités arabes (arabité) et régionales (khaleejiness).

يحتل إنستغرام، الذي هو ثاني أكثر منصات التواصل الاجتماعي استخدامًا في العالم، مكانًا مميزًا لدى الفنانين ومحبي الفن لعرض الأعمال الفنية والمحتوى المرئي على الجمهور العريض. في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا، يجمع حاليًا حساب @arabic.pop.art 399,000 متابع، من خلال إعادة نشر أشكال مختلفة من الأعمال الرقمية المنتجة في المنطقة يوميًا. واستناداً إلى تحليل جميع المنشورات على هذا الحساب من مارس 2019 إلى مارس 2020، أقوم في هذا البحث بمناقشة الحضور المهم لمواطني الخليج والمقيمين فيه ضمن الفنانين والمتابعين لهذا الحساب على إنستغرام، وأهتم بكيفية استخدام الرموز والأيقونات والمواد الاستهلاكية العربية والخليجية في الأعمال الفنية المنشورة. من خلال محتوى هذا الحساب ونظراً لشعبيته، يشارك بشكل فعال في إبراز ثقافة الشباب العربي وتشكيل تمثيلات الهويتين العربية والإقليمية (الخليجية).
