How is the noncitizen subaltern Other portrayed in Gulf cultural productions? While sociological studies argue that Gulf states have defined a national narrative centered on a purely Arab-Islamic identity excluding the Persian, African and South Asian heritage, the way in which cultural productions of the region address the citizen vs. non-citizen divide, the local vs. foreign hierarchy and implicitly question the construction of identity and the position of foreigners in the region is more nuanced. National identity and otherness are more perceived as a continuum than air-tight categories. These “mixed signals” sent by Gulf region cultural productions are analyzed here through their portrayal of the historical relationships between the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent and the way language reflects porosity. The article finally examines the tight rope walked by cultural productions between the need to “discipline the Khaleeji self” and root out racism toward South Asians, and the temptation to “discipline the other” so as to render him suitable for the type of modernity Gulf states and societies aspire to.

Comment l’Autre subalterne non-citoyen est-il représenté dans les productions culturelles du Golfe ? Alors que les études sociologiques affirment que les États du Golfe ont défini un récit national centré sur une identité purement arabo-islamique excluant les héritages persan, africain et sud-asiatique, la manière dont les productions culturelles de la région abordent le clivage citoyen/non-citoyen, la hiérarchie local/étranger et remettent implicitement en question la construction de l'identité et la position des étrangers dans la région est plus nuancée. L'identité nationale et l'altérité sont davantage perçues comme un continuum que comme des catégories étanches. Ces “signaux contradictoires” envoyés par les productions culturelles de la région du Golfe sont analysés ici à travers leur représentation des relations historiques entre la péninsule Arabique et le sous-continent indien, et la manière dont la langue reflète la porosité. L'article examine enfin la corde raide sur laquelle marchent les productions culturelles entre la nécessité de "discipliner le moi golfique" et d'éradiquer le racisme à l'égard des ressortissants du sous-continent, et la tentation de "discipliner l'autre" afin de le rendre apte au type de modernité auquel aspirent les États et les sociétés du Golfe.

كيف يُصوَّر الآخر غير المواطن في المنتجات الثقافية الخليجية؟ لئن بينت الدراسات السوسيولوجية بأن دول الخليج حددت هويتها الوطنية من خلال سردية تتمحور حول العناصر العربية الإسلامية بحيث تستبعد المكوّن الفارسي والأفريقي والجنوب آسيوي، فإن الطريقة التي تتناول بها هذه المنتجات الثقافية الحد الفاصل بين المواطن وغير المواطن، والتراتبية المقامة بين اللمحلي والدخيل، والطريقة التي تسائل من خلالها بناء الهوية وموقع الأجانب في المنطقة، تُبدي تنوعا ومرونة. فتظهر فيها كل من الهوية الوطنية والهوية الأجنبية مواقع متغيرة على مدى «متصَّل» أكثر منها فئات جامدة. يتم تحليل هذه "الإشارات المختلطة" التي ترسلها المنتجات الثقافية الخليجية من خلال دراسة تصويرها للعلاقات التاريخية بين شبه الجزيرة العربية وشبه القارة الهندية، والطريقة التي تعكس بها اللهجات الخليجية مسامّية الهويات. ويبحث المقال أخيرًا في الحبل المشدود الذي تسير عليه هذه المنتجات بين الحاجة إلى "تهذيب الذات الخليجية" واستئصال العنصرية تجاه الجنوب آسيويين، وبين الميل إلى "تأديب الآخر" لجعله مناسبًا لنوع الحداثة التي تطمح إليها دول ومجتمعات الخليج.
