Développement et fragmentation d’une ville moyenne en cours de mondialisation : le cas de Salalah (Oman)

L’étude de la reconfiguration économique et spatiale actuelle de la ville de Salalah, dans le Sud du Sultanat d’Oman, invite à porter l’attention sur la problématique des « villes secondaires » arabes dans le Golfe, trop négligées ces dernières années au profit des grandes villes. Salalah n’est apparue sur la carte économique mondiale qu’après la construction de son port à conteneurs vers la fin des années 1990, port qui est en passe d’être complété par d’autres projets industriels, touristiques, infrastructurels et urbains majeurs. L’article tente de comprendre dans quelle mesure Salalah peut être conçue aujourd’hui comme une ville « en cours de mondialisation » et comment elle développe des qualités perçues comme caractéristiques des villes « postmodernes » et portuaires contemporaines. L’analyse porte enfin sur la fragmentation de l’actuelle agglomération urbaine, qui résulte de l’établissement de projets à accès limité et économiquement intégrés aux circuits mondiaux plus que locaux.

To study the current economic and spatial reconfiguration of the city of Salalah in Southern Oman means to analyse one of the “secondary cities” on the Arab side of the Gulf. These have been neglected compared to the interest shown for several years now for major cities. Salalah only appeared on the economic world map after its container port was built in the late 1990s. In addition, further major industrial, tourism and infrastructural projects are currently being developed. The article endeavours to understand to which extent Salalah nowadays is to be apprehended as a “globalising” city and how it is developing features considered characteristic for “postmodern” cities as well as for contemporary port cities. The fragmentation of the current urban agglomeration is of particular interest, as it mainly results from projects allowing only limited access, more integrated into the global rather than the local economy.
