Questo studio esamina in parallelo le conseguenze della Rivoluzione russa del 1917 e della scarsità di cibo, ponendo questi fattori in connessione con il crollo dell’Impero asburgico e la crescita di consensi a favore dei socialdemocratici. L’articolo illustra e compara le reazioni prodotte sia livello statale, sia all’interno dei partiti socialdemocratici nella parte austriaca e in quella ungherese dell’Impero. Al centro dell’analisi vengono posti questi interrogativi: perché il partito socialdemocratico austriaco fu in grado di aumentare i propri consensi e raggiungere un significativo ruolo politico nell’ultima fase bellica e ciò non avvenne per il suo equivalente ungherese? La dettagliata analisi di queste motivazioni mostrerà le ragioni per cui la socialdemocrazia austriaca riuscì ad impedire l’avvento di una dittatura nel biennio 1918-1919, mentre la sinistra ungherese non riuscì a prevenirlo.

This study examines the parallel consequences of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the food shortage in connection with the disintegration of the Habsburg Empire and the rise of the Social Democrats.It also presents and compares both State and Social Democratics Parties’ reactions in the two different parts of the Empire, the Austrian and the Hungarian. The following questions are at the center: why was the Austrian Social Democratic Party able to increase social base and gain significant political positions in the last phase of the war and why did not it all happen to its Hungarian equivalent? The detailed exploration of these reasons will show through which causes Austrian Social Democracy managed to stop a dictatorship drift in 1918-19, while the Hungarian Left did not.
